David Alonso’s First Moto2 Test: “Hard Work Ahead, but It’s Fun”
Moto3 Champion David Alonso shares insights on his Moto2 debut at Jerez, discussing the challenges ahead, his 2024 achievements, and plans for 2025 with Aspar.
David Alonso opens up about an early move to MotoGP in 2026, outlining what it would take for him to make the jump from Moto2.
For Moto3 World Champion David Alonso, all roads lead to MotoGP. Alonso himself is not ruling out the possibility of joining the premier class as early as 2026.
Speaking about the possibility of a move to MotoGP after just one season in Moto2, Alonso acknowledged that the switch hinges on an extraordinary performance next year. “I wouldn’t rule out switching to MotoGP as early as next year.”
“That class is, of course, the ultimate goal. But starting there in 2026 would only happen if I become Moto2 World Champion in 2025. If I manage that, then there’s an option. But, I don’t think it’s realistic,” he said.
As much as the 18-year-old is already on the radar of all teams and factories, there would only be one realistic chance of competing in MotoGP as early as 2026 – joining Honda.
With the exception of the two Honda riders Marini and Zarco, the entire field has fixed agreements until the end of 2026. Most of the contracts have been designed in such a way that big movement on the transfer market will happen for the 2027 season when MotoGP adopts their new regulation set.
Regardless of how he performs in his rookie season in Moto2, there is nothing to stop Alonso from staying in the middle category until 2027: “Moto2 is very special, and I’m aware that there’s a lot to learn here,” he admitted. “Johann Zarco is a good example. The better you prepare for MotoGP, the better.”
The Frenchman entered the intermediate class in 2012 and took three three years to get onto World Champion level before finally winning his first title the year prior. Only after defending his Moto2 title in 2016, Zarco made the step up into MotoGP where he had a correspondingly strong debut in the premier class finishing his first MotoGP season 6th in the standings.

With his first test on Moto2 machinery already behind him, David Alonso will have to prepare for the heavier and more powerful bike.
“After the first day, I realised how hard it will be to compete here. I didn’t even touch a button on the settings, so this was a perfect way to wrap up an incredible year. It was incredble, but it was tough.”
“Next year will be easier, like my first Moto3 season in 2023. There won’t be the same pressure for top results straight away. I’ll have more relaxed weekends, focusing on development instead of records.”
