Moto3 Champion David Alonso shares insights on his Moto2 debut at Jerez and plans for 2025 with Aspar.
David Alonso, fresh off his championship-winning Moto3 campaign took his first steps into Moto2 machinery during a post-season test at Jerez. The Colombian sensation described the test attended by several Moto2 and Moto3 teams as a “very positive” first step ahead of his rookie season in the intermediate class.
“It has been a very positive test. We are going into the winter break happy because we now know what Moto2 is. It’s not an easy category, and we’ll need to work and stay consistent. This winter, I’ll focus on improving my strength to meet the demands of this class.”
Having to adapt to a much more powerful machine for 2025, Alonso was satisfied by his first taste of Moto2. “Yesterday, I was happy to be faster on my first day with the Moto2 than I had been with the Moto3. With this bike, you have fun – there are things to explore that you don’t in Moto3, and that makes riding even more enjoyable.”
“The biggest difference is using the throttle to steer out of corners. What happens when you open the throttle is impressive,” he explained. “I admit, I lost control a few times! Braking is another major change. The final deceleration toward the apex feels completely different.”
Although, Moto2 is a step up in terms of physicality for the Moto3 World Champion, he is looking forward to a new challenge in 2025. “I really enjoyed riding – it’s a new challenge.”
“After the first day, I realised how hard it will be to compete here. I didn’t even touch a button on the settings, so this was a perfect way to wrap up an incredible year.”

With his first test on the new machinery done, it was time for Alonso to look back one more time to the unbelievable, record-breaking season he had in 2024.
“At the start of the year, I took it easy, but as soon as I saw the opportunity, I gave it my all. It’s very nice to end the 2024 season this way. Tomorrow we’ll wake up and realise what incredible things we achieved this year.”
For 2025, the Colombian will join forces with fellow Moto2 rookie Dani Holgado in the Aspar Moto2 team. Despite the two were fighting fiercely on track in their time in Moto3, Alonso is hopeful pairing up with the former GasGas Tech3 rider will result in a good time.
“We’re going to have fun with this guy in our box. We’ll both be rookies, learning from each other. It’s important to take it easy – we’ll struggle at the start, but we’ll focus on improving race by race.”
“Next year will be easier, like my first Moto3 season in 2023. There won’t be the same pressure for top results straight away. I’ll have more relaxed weekends, focusing on development instead of records.”
