BMW Actively ‘Working on [MotoGP Entry] Strategy’ Amid 2027 Rule Changes
BMW Motorrad Director of Motorsport Sven Blusch has confirmed the German manufacturer is actively "working on a [MotoGP entry[ strategy".
With the technical regulations being overhauled for the 2027 MotoGP season, the premier class will also switch its tyre supplier.
MotoGP is set for a new era starting in 2027 as Pirelli will become the series’s official tyre supplier.
A new five-year contract until the end of 2031 will coincide with the technical regulations debut in 2027.
Pirelli currently supply Moto2, Moto3 and much of the Road to MotoGP feeder series. Now, their presence in the sport will expand to the premier class and MotoE.
Further details on the tyre allocations and specifications to be supplied by Pirelli will be announced soon.
The expansion into the premier class also comes with adjustments to the overall strategy.
Pirelli currently prides itself on the fact that all its competition tires are commercially available and can be used by private customers.
BMW Motorrad Director of Motorsport Sven Blusch has confirmed the German manufacturer is actively "working on a [MotoGP entry[ strategy".
MotoGP tyres, on the other hand, are prototypes designed exclusively for the 22 MotoGP riders and test teams, with their quantity and distribution strictly regulated.
It remains to be seen how Pirelli will approach this transition and which motorcycles will be used for the initial simulations.
By 2027, MotoGP bikes will be different from those currently available for prototype development.
At the same time, it is conceivable that MotoGP’s decision to side with Pirelli is a major setback for Michelin.
It’s no secret that the French manufacturer did everything possible to maintain its presence in MotoGP and MotoE beyond 2026.
Michelin will remain the exclusive supplier for MotoGP and MotoE until the end of the current technical regulations, at the close of the 2026 season. The decision marks the end of a then-11-year partnership.
