Alex Marquez’s push for the 2025 MotoGP title took a painful hit at Assen, with the Gresini Ducati rider sustaining a broken left hand in a crash during Sunday’s Dutch Grand Prix.

The Spaniard came off worse in a feisty exchange with Pedro Acosta, crashing out of fifth place on lap six after an aggressive move through Turn 5 led to contact.

Marquez attempted to repass Acosta just two laps after being overtaken, but contact between the pair appeared to nudge Marquez’s front brake lever, locking the front wheel as it touched down and violently throwing him off the bike.

The incident was reviewed by the FIM stewards but deemed a racing incident, with no penalties issued.

Marquez was quickly taken to the medical centre for evaluation, where scans confirmed a fracture to the second metacarpal in his left hand.

The injury will require surgery, which is expected to take place Sunday evening in Madrid.

It’s a significant setback for the younger Marquez, who had taken a strong second-place finish in Saturday’s sprint and came into the weekend just 40 points behind championship leader – and brother – Marc Marquez.

With Sunday’s DNF and Marc taking home the full 37 points from Assen, that gap has now grown to 68 points with the season almost at the halfway mark.

While no official recovery timeline has been announced, the younger Marquez brother is targeting a return for the Sachsenring round in ten days’ time.

The crash caps a rollercoaster weekend for the Gresini rider, who had shown podium pace but ultimately walks away from Assen quite battered having scored just 9 points.
