Reigning World Champion Jorge Martin has suffered a major setback in the early hours of testing in Sepang. The Spaniard highsided twice from his Aprilia within two hours, coming back to the garage with “pain in his left foot and right hand”.
The second, bigger accident occured in Sepang’s tight Turn 2 when Martin’s Aprilia RS-GP send him into a somersault as he tried to flick the bike from right to left.
After the Spaniard hit the asphalt hard, the session was red-flagged for a short period while Martin was taken to the medical centre before being transferred to a nearby hospital.
The World Champion had crashed before when less than an hour had run down from the clock but luckily escaped relatively unscathed.
From Aprilia: “Jorge Martin after a crash in Turn 2, has been taken to the circuit medical centre. He will undergo further medical checks, as soon as we will have an official medical update, we will inform you.”
A later update read: “Jorge will be taken to Aurelius Hospital in Nilai to undergo medical checks. So far he is suffering pain at his left foot and right hand.”
The Spaniard had completed just 13 laps with his best lap time being a 2’01.321. He is 23rd on the timesheets as it stands.
Martin was not the only faller in the first three hours of the day with Fabio Di Giannantonio, Pedro Acosta, Ai Ogura and Raul Fernandez all going down as well.
The latter had been taken to the medical centre “for a check up” and was diagnosed with a fractured metacarpal bone in his left hand and a small foot fracture.
