Francesco Bagnaia has voiced his concerns over MotoGP’s current point-scoring system after losing the 2024 World Championship to Jorge Martin and indirectly called on MotoGP promoter Dorna and the FIM to change the status quo.

The Italian believes the current system no longer fully suits the championship since the introduction of Sprint races.

“This points system has been in place for as long as I can remember and was there even before Sprints were introduced,” Bagnaia said. “With them, however, the way you earn points across a race weekend has changed significantly.”

“With the introduction of the Sprints, I think we should consider introducing bonus points for those who win both races or set the fastest lap. There should be something that rewards the fastest riders.”

Bagnaia lost out to Jorge Martin by ten points in this year’s MotoGP title fight. The Pramac rider out-scored Bagnaia significantly on Saturdays, although the Italian was still the second-highest Sprint scorer of the season and matched Martin with seven Sprint wins.

His numerous crashes, for example in Barcelona, Misano and Sepang, played a decisive role in Bagnaia’s World Championship defeat as well. The Italian himself never made a secret of this, blaming only himself.

“I have always wanted to win and achieve the best possible result because it’s not in my nature to settle for a lower position,” Bagnaia explained. “Sometimes, though, there are moments when it’s better to ease off a little. This year, one less mistake could have made the difference.”

Quite a few crashes have piled up for some riders this season. Here is who crashed the most in 2024 MotoGP.

“MotoGP has always been a championship that has rewarded consistency,” he said. “And the scoring system that is in place today has also allowed me to fight despite eight zeros [non-scores], so it’s balanced.”

However, the Italian noted that Sprint races have introduced new dynamics that impact not just the action on track but the championship structure as a whole. “The Sprints influence several aspects, not just the show. Therefore, maybe it’s time to consider some changes.”
