Taiyo Furusato claimed his first Moto3 pole position the hard way at the Moto3 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. The Honda Team Asia rider fought his way through Q1 before heading straight out in the second session, maintaining his momentum.
Shadowing Angel Piqueras for a slipstream advantage, Furusato posted a stunning 1m 40.394s lap, securing his maiden Moto3 pole position.
Championship leader David Alonso looked poised for another pole after holding the top spot ahead of the final moments.
However, a late crash at turn eight denied the Colombian his back-to-back pole at Misano, although he managed to remount without causing a yellow flag. Alonso finished just 0.059s off Furusato’s time, taking second on the grid.
Rookie Angel Piqueras, who impressed at Misano earlier in the season, secured a front-row start with third place, riding aggressively with his unique lines.
Ivan Ortola was also in the mix, experimenting with tactics to claim fourth place for MT Helmets – MSI, while Stefano Nepa and Collin Veijer rounded out the top six after a tight session.
Adrian Fernandez placed seventh for Leopard Racing, followed by Munoz in eighth, who pushed hard after his P2-topping morning session.
Rounding out the top ten were Rueda in ninth, leading much of the Q1 pack, and Joel Kelso in tenth for BOE Motorsports.
