Marquez Tops Damp-Dodging FP1 with Early Flyer at Sachsenring

Marc Marquez leads the opening practice at the German GP after an early 1m20.3s lap proves untouchable. Acosta crashes late as Miller and Bezzecchi round out the top three.

Marc Marquez opened his German GP weekend with intent, setting a benchmark early in FP1 that would prove untouchable for the rest of the field.

The Ducati rider’s 1m20.372s lap came on his seventh tour and held strong despite a flurry of late time attacks from rivals on fresh tyres.

Miller came closest, pushing his Prima Pramac Yamaha within 0.109s after a late charge on his second medium rear.

The Australian briefly looked like he might threaten Marquez’s hold on top spot but ultimately settled for second.

Aprilia’s Marco Bezzecchi rounded out the top three, three tenths off the pace, ahead of a recovering Johann Zarco in fourth.

The Frenchman had been the session’s first faller, going down at Turn 1 around the 11-minute mark but rebounded well with a 1m20.880s lap.

Fifth went to Maverick Viñales, who slotted in just ahead of Fabio di Giannantonio, both riders managing to dip below 1m21s in the final phase of the session.

Joan Mir and Fabio Quartararo followed in seventh and eighth respectively, with the gap between them a mere 0.002s.

Francesco Bagnaia ended ninth, just 0.7s off his teammate but never looked truly comfortable. Miguel Oliveira completed the top ten in a solid start for the second Pramac Yamaha rider.

Outside the sharp end, Pedro Acosta’s session ended with a late crash in the final minute as he tried to improve on a mid-pack lap.

Weather teased but ultimately stayed dry throughout. Light rain briefly threatened around 10:50, but never developed, allowing for a dry and relatively clean session – save for Zarco’s and Acosta’s incidents.

There were also updates on the medical front. Enea Bastianini missed Friday running due to appendicitis, with Tech3 monitoring his situation for the weekend.

Alex Marquez was declared fit to ride despite recent discomfort, with early signs pointing to him continuing past FP1. Luca Marini returned to action following his Suzuka testing crash.
