"Factors Beyond My Control" Stopped Sergio Garcia MotoGP Step-Up
Sergio Garcia was close to a 2025 MotoGP step-up but ultimately had to opt for another year in Moto2 due to “factors beyond [his] control”.
Following the recent race weekend, it has been officially confirmed that Sergio Garcia will not be advancing to MotoGP next year. Instead, the MTHelmets-MSi team announced that Garcia, along with Ivan Ortola, will continue to compete in Moto2 for the upcoming season.
Earlier in the year, Garcia had been rumored to be in talks with Pramac Yamaha and Trackhouse Aprilia for a potential MotoGP ride, but those opportunities did not materialize.
Trackhouse opted to sign Ai Ogura, Garcia’s current teammate, while Pramac is expected to have Jack Miller partner with Miguel Oliveira to load Yamaha new satellite team with experienced riders.
Garcia has expressed his frustration at missing out on a MotoGP seat for 2025. He admitted: “This isn’t the outcome I was hoping for, but I’m glad the situation is now clear. Staying in Moto2 allows me another shot at winning two world championships.”
Garcia acknowledges that being Spanish may have worked against him. With MotoGP currently having a significant number of Spanish and Italian riders – ten Spaniards and six Italians – the competition for seats is intense.
Among the few non-Spanish riders is Jack Miller, who is said to have received strong support from MotoGP officials. Garcia realizes that, in this context, being Spanish might have been a disadvantage.
He pointed out that external factors prevented his promotion to MotoGP. “I’ve done everything I could,” Garcia said.
“Leading the Moto2 championship should have been enough to secure a MotoGP spot, but it didn’t happen due to circumstances beyond my control. Still, I’m content and confident that my time will come.”
