MotoGP’s Friday afternoon session at Assen turned into a demolition derby as multiple crashes and two red flags disrupted Practice at the Dutch GP.
Amid all the chaos, Fabio Quartararo came out on top, edging out Alex Marquez and Pedro Acosta in a session that ended prematurely for Marc Marquez.
Following his massive shunt in FP1, the Spaniard suffered another crash late in the session when he lost the front going through turn 7. He was left quite winded in the gravel trap.

Marquez initially was back on his feet quite quickly before immediately crouching back down in the gravel trap, quite heavily in pain in what looked like the Spainard’s groin area.
Needing a bit of help to get out of the gravel trap, Marquez seemed relatively okay when arriving back to the Ducati pit, but headed to the medical centre for a check-up shortly after. (EDIT: The Spaniard has been declared fit by the medical centre.)
The first half of the session already hinted at trouble when several riders were surprised by the low temperatures early in the session and fell victim to front end crashes.
Ai Ogura’s vicious highside at Turn 11 brought out the red flags after his RS-GP caught fire, scattering Trackhouse debris across the racing line.
It shouldn’t remain the last interruption of the session. With thirteen minutes left on the clock, Lorenzo Savadori suffered a similar crash as his Japanese Aprilia colleague before, resulting in another red flag. The officials had suspected an oil spillage.

With the session back underway a few minutes later, all eyes were on Pecco Bagnaia, who, after all the red and yellow flag chaos, was left with only one fresh soft rear tyre at his disposal.
His gamble on a two-shot end to his session nearly backfiring, the Ducati box breathed a collective sigh of relief when the Italian went deep into the 1:31s on his last attempt. Bagnaia finished the day 5th ahead of teammate Marc Marquez.
Fabio di Giannantonio led the charge for VR46 in 7th ahead of Maverick Vinales and Franco Morbidelli.
Johann Zarco secured the final spot in Q2 by the skin of his teeth after pushing Raul Fernandez out of the top ten by 0.001s on his last attempt.
The Spaniard jokingly remarked after the session, he would not eat today so he can get into Q2 tomorrow morning.
