Pedro Acosta set the early benchmark at the Catalan Grand Prix by topping Free Practice 1 in Barcelona, heading Johann Zarco and Marc Marquez.
The Red Bull KTM rider fired in a 1m38.979s late in the session to become the first rider into the 1m38s bracket, finishing 0.095s clear of Zarco’s LCR Honda.
Ducati Lenovo’s Marc Marquez had held top spot through the middle stages with a 1m39.198s, but was shuffled back to third as the pace increased in the final runs.
Acosta’s effort made it four KTMs inside the top ten, with Tech3’s Maverick Viñales fourth and Brad Binder seventh.

The two rookies, Ai Ogura and Gresini’s Fermin Aldeguer, rounded out the Top 15.
Francesco Bagnaia endured a disastrous, though not alarming, morning.
Technical problems, later revealed to be electronics issues by Davide Tardozzi, forced him onto his second bike, leaving the factory Ducati rider just 23rd, ahead only of injury returnee Somkiat Chantra.
