Having already led the morning FP1 session, Gresini Racing rider Alex Marquez set the pace in the second premier-class practice session at Portimao, as several big names missed out on automatic progression into Q2.
Although the one-hour session began under clearing skies, the rain, having already affected Moto3 and Moto2 earlier, made an unwelcome comeback mid-way through MotoGP Practice, catching out Jack Miller on his first time attack run.

The Aussie, having gone down at turn 13, despite making it back to the pits in time for a final time attack, fell short of a top ten spot and, like fellow Practice crashers Luca Marini and Franco Morbidelli, who had both gone down earlier, will have to fight his way through Q1 on Saturday morning.
With the rain backing away again towards the end of the session, lap times tumbled. Marquez was the first to dip into the 1m37s, retaking the top spot late in the session after Pedro Acosta had briefly led on his KTM.
The Spaniardās 1m37.974 ultimately proved unbeatable, marking possibly his strongest Friday showing of the season two weeks after securing runner-up in the championship.
Going under the radar in this morning’s FP1, even being outpaced by his MotoGP debutant teammate Nicolo Bulega, Bagnaia showed that his return to form in Malaysia wasn’t just a fluke.
Though leaving it quite late to secure a spot in Q2, the Italian came closest to Friday’s toprunner Marquez, just 0.030s adrift when the clock went out.
Marco Bezzecchi, being unable to beat Acosta’s 1m38.062 just as he was unable to keep his Aprilia settled through the final corner for most of the session, placed fourth for the Noale factory. Hondaās Joan Mir made it three different manufacturers inside the top five.
Johann Zarco put in his best Friday performance in quite a while, making the best of his limited access to Honda improvements in sixth, just ahead of Fabio Di Giannantonio, the fastest VR46 rider.
Fermin Aldeguer, Pol Espargaro, and Trackhouse rookie Ai Ogura completed the Q2 places.
Luca Marini narrowly missed out in 11th, joined by Franco Morbidelli and Fabio Quartararo among the names forced into Q1.
Raul Fernandez, despite a heavy morning crash, was allowed to continue racing following a CT scan at a local hospital and finished 15th behind Brad Binder.
