The Moto2 championship’s Japanese Grand Prix unfolded under challenging conditions, concluding with Manuel Gonzalez claiming his first victory after a slick tyre gamble paid off.
The race was interrupted by a red flag due to rain, but Gonzalez showcased his skill, starting from 14th on the grid and dropping to 23rd before making a stunning recovery.
By lap nine, he had closed the gap to leader Ai Ogura, setting three consecutive fastest laps and taking the lead through Victory Corner. Gonzalez ultimately finished 2.535 seconds ahead, marking the ninth different winner this season.
Championship leader Ogura also opted for slicks, quickly moving to the front after passing teammate Sergio Garcia and Jake Dixon. However, he couldn’t match Gonzalez’s pace and secured second place in front of his home crowd.
Filip Salac completed the podium, overcoming qualifying struggles that left him 18th on the grid. His slick tyre strategy paid off, resulting in his first podium of the year.
Jeremy Alcoba climbed from 22nd to fourth place, while Zonta van den Goorbergh rebounded from early contact to finish fifth, achieving his career-best result.
