"A Great Change" - Riders React to Newly Appointed MotoGP Steward
As MotoGP appoints a new Head of Stewards Panel, riders react to the news. The general consensus: It’s a great change and the correct decision!
The MotoGP paddock is abuzz with anticipation as former Grand Prix and World Superbike racer Simon Crafar is set to become the series’ new Head of Steward Panel in 2025.
The Australian will take over from two-time 500cc champion Freddie Spencer, who has been at the helm since 2019. Spencer’s tenure has been marked by criticism over inconsistent rulings and a perceived disconnect from modern racing.
The decision to appoint Crafar as the new chief steward has been met with enthusiasm from several MotoGP riders. Current points leader Jorge Martin expects a more equitable stewarding process.
He notes: “It’s a big change, a great change. I know Simon quite well, and he continues to ride, which means he understands how a bike moves and how quickly things can change on the track.”
“He is always eager to understand the sport, engaging with us and asking questions. It will serve him well in his new role.”
“Having someone who understands the dynamics of modern racing and is willing to engage with riders is a step in the right direction,” adds six-time World Champion Marc Marquez.
Reigning world champion Francesco Bagnaia highlights the importance of having a good dialogue with the stewards. He thinks Crafar will have a better connection to today’s riders.
“One of the hardest jobs in the paddock is being a steward,” the Italian says. “But with Simon, we have the opportunity for open communication. If he can maintain consistency in his decisions, it will improve the fairness of the sport.”
