Pecco Bagnaia Reveals "the biggest mistake of [his] career"

After winning the MotoGP title in 2022, Francesco Bagnaia is at the peak of his career so far. He reveals the biggest mistake of his career.

Bagnaia started his career in 2012 in the Spanish CEV Repsol Moto3 Championship, which he finished third overall behind Alex Márquez and Germany’s Luca Amato.

“I was always fighting at the front there against Rins and Márquez. But I realised then that I wasn’t ready for the World Championship, which is why I wanted to stay in the Spanish championship for another year.”

But the Italian’s plans changed when he made his Moto3 GP debut in 2013 on an FTR Honda alongside Romano Fenati at Team Italia.

Bagnaia later stated, “That was the biggest mistake of my career. I was a Dorna rider and they wanted me in the World Championship. That’s where this premature move came from.”

The season was disappointing. In 17 races, Bagnaia did not even make it into the top-15. “These experiences help me today to master difficult situations. Because back then I learned never to give up,” he says, looking back on that time calmly.

Through his time in the Spanish championship as well as in the Spanish Aspar Moto3 team, the 25-time GP winner speaks Spanish very well and still sometimes visits the team to whom he owes his success at the time.

“Exactly, I drop in on Jorge Martinez and the team every now and then,” Pecco confirmed.”They gave me the motivation back then to get back to the top. I’m grateful to them for that.”
