No Homologation, No Party - Portuguese Grand Prix 2024 In Danger
Several riders complain about the gravel traps in Portimao. Dorna boss Carmelo Ezpeleta threatens the Portuguese Track could not be homologated in 2024.
After some heavy crashes at the Portuguese Grand Prix in Portimao, several riders complain about the condition of the gravel traps.
Having seen Pol Espargaro’s almost unbraked impact in Practice 2, complaints grew louder. The safety officers reacted by putting a layer of fine gravel over the existing traps.
Carmelo Ezpeleta confirmed to SPEEDWEEK.com that this will remain an exception and will not be accepted in the future.
The Spaniard threatens the track operators that the Autodromo Internacional do Algarve can not be homologated for 2024 should the gravel traps not be overhauled.
“If the condition of the gravel beds is not completely changed, we will not have a MotoGP event here next year.”
“Without regulation-compliant gravel beds, the Autódromo will not get Grade A homologation for 2024; so they cannot be included in the GP calendar.”
Ezpeleta adds weight to his threat, announcing that MotoGP has enough interested parties to cope with Portimao’s failure.
