For the first time in 2023, Augusto Fernández is on a MotoGP bike. At the shakedown test in Sepang, the Spaniard impressed – even his team boss Hervé Poncharal.

Despite having limited time on the bike prior to the Sepang test, Poncharal says he is impressed with the rookie’s performance.

“I am pleasantly surprised. At the end of the day you need talent, and Augusto has talent. He is the Moto2 world champion!”

However, Poncharal also cautions that they are only at the beginning and some restraint is needed to avoid making mistakes in the next few months.

“He has to forget about Moto2, the trophy is now in his trophy room. When he is a grandfather, he can tell his grandchildren about it.”

“In MotoGP, he is starting from scratch. Augusto understands this because he is smart, humble and well-mannered. He knows that work is a key element for success.”

To help the young Spaniard get used to the new MotoGP rocket, although MotoGP veteran Pol Espargaró will only arrive for the official test, his crew surrounding crew chief Paul Trevathan was also brought to Sepang for the shakedown test.

“Augusto has a lot of experienced people around him who can help him, talk to him and discuss things with him.”

Despite the weather throwing a spanner in the works, Poncharal is happy with what was achieved in the first two days of the Sepang test.

After two difficult years for the Tech3 team, the Frenchman is delighted to see happy faces in his team’s garage again.

“The atmosphere in the pits is really good. Paul Trevathan confirmed that to me. That is an important part of this test in Sepang.”

“The last two years have been difficult. I don’t want to talk about that anymore. But it’s important that our guys now have a smile on their faces again. Everyone who visits our pit can feel the positive atmosphere.”
