Alex Marquez is switching to the Ducati of the Gresini MotoGP team for the new season. Many consider the Spaniard a secret favorite for regular top position finishings.

After three less successful years with Honda, Alex Marquez secured one of the eight coveted Ducati seats for the new season.

In view of the fact that the Spaniard has already clinched MotoGP podiums on what was then a rudimentary Repsol Honda, Marquez is an exciting figure for 2023.

Various experts believe the 26-year-old has a lot of potential. After all, it’s not for nothing that Marquez became Moto2 World Champion in 2019.

With the Ducati, which was still superior last year, Marquez is hoping for a lot. The Spaniard is delighted to have landed one of the highly contested seats.

“It’s a great opportunity for me. I already felt welcome in Valencia. I’m so happy to be here now and I’m so excited to get back on the bike in Malaysia.”

Marquez “has not lost the motivation to ride a motorcycle”, even during the difficult two years at Honda.

“The motivation is great. We have to continue like this. Sure there will be ups and downs, but we always have to stick together and work together to show a great performance and season.”

After announcing the move to Gresini, Honda had isolated the Spaniard, who felt “left alone” in the last weeks of his Honda commitment.

“Yes, I suffered, but I also learned from it. It was not an easy situation, we suffered with the bike and everything.”

“But I can’t complain about the LCR team, they were there for me all the time, I had a really good crew and the farewell in Valencia was also very emotional.”

The season-finale in Valencia was followed by the post-season test after the season ended. Marquez gathered his first feeling for his new bike and admits to being surprised by the performance of the new package.

“The potential is there. I didn’t expect to already do the same lap times as on the Honda in the first run – or even faster with the medium rear tire.”

“I didn’t ride with a lot of confidence, but still the lap times were there from the first run. That’s a great sign.”

A sign the Spaniard will try to confirm at the pre-season test in Sepang. At the shakedown test, Marquez will try to “copy a few things [from the renowned Ducati riders] here and there”

“I think I’m in for an interesting pre-season, where I’ll try to adapt and then start the year well with the first race at Portimão.”

Looking back at last year and knowing that all Ducatis are capable of winning, Marquez is already talking about the world championship fight.

“We know that this bike can fight for the world championship, so we have to work very hard.”
